ONE CANDLE BURNING (1994)
Produced by Ian Tamblyn
'One Candle Burning"
was voted the number one "local" release of the year and was also
included in one reviewer's over-all Top 10 of the year - Ottawa
X Press magazine, Ottawa, ON.
From the cowboy rodeo
of the western prairie to a Belfast graveyard, from the mountains
of Iraq to the sailing of the seven seas, Stark presents an eclectic
mix of both geography and musical styles. There is romance, tragedy,
dreams and loss of dreams. Each song, however, contains one candle
burning....life should never lose its sense of hope. To date, there
has been no recorded discovery of the bottle tossed into the Rideau
Canal ("This Love for Thee").
"A brilliant piece of work" Chopper
McKinnon, CBC Radio/ "Canadian Spaces", CKCU-FM, Ottawa, ON
"The best material has a comforting familiarity,
like an old folk song or lullabye. The country-flavoured 'Funny
Old World' and the simple Celtic sing-along 'Irish Dust' are two
such songs"
Lynn Saxberg, The Ottawa Citizen
"....the stirring 'Irish Dust' is a stand-out
that puts U2's 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' to shame...this collection
of subtle, heartfelt songs brings him a significant step closer
to... (being)...amongst the best singer-songwriters on the Canadina
circuit today."
Joe Reilly, Trans FM, Radio Carleton,
Ottawa, ON.
"...a beautifully-rendered cache of contemplative
materials which deserves to be taken to heart alongside the best
works of Gordon Lightfoot and Stephen Fearing... (the album) is
filled with uncommonly fine writing, songs which are able to simultaneously
project intimate concerns of the heart on top of a compassionate
world view....a coherent celebration of human dignity and forebearance...listening
to 'One Candle Burning' is like hearing stories from a stranger
on a long train journey - by the end of the trip, you're enriched
and feeling a little less alone in the world." Peter
Schneider, Ottawa X Press magazine, Ottawa, ON.
"..a strong album of folk material that could
find its way onto late night FM time slots..." - RPM magazine. "..he
has a full, rich voice, and the material is well-produced, with
nicely crafted arrangements....in terms of lyrics, there is some
angst, some optimism, some regret, some celebration. But in the
end, Stark always leaves the candle burning."
Dirty Linen magazine.
